1) QTC: Questions, Thoughts, and Contentions: Throughout the semester, you will submit responses to readings and other relevant reactions to the content of the course and your learning experiences. A typed QTC paper is due each time a chapter is due. You may use the QTCs to help you formulate a summary of the readings. As well, QTCs are an opportunity to consider vital questions raised by the reading, think about your response to the authors’ points, and develop your arguments with or about the material.
Due: At the beginning of the class on days when a chapter reading is due.
Format: Typed,
double spaced, 1 inch margins, 10 point arial or 12 point Times New Roman
Length: 2 pages minimum
Penalties: All grammar and spelling penalties apply (see syllabus)
2) Reports from the Field: Each Friday of class is devoted to your “reports from the field.” Each week, you will be given an “in the field” assignment. This assignment will require you to observe, describe, and assess various intercultural communication behaviors related to the ideas developed in the readings for the week. Format for this “Report from the Field” varies, depending on the mood of the student.
Due: During class on the days assigned (unless the format selected is a written report, which must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. (noon) of the due date.
Format: Oral presentation (informative speech, biographical narrative, etc.); Creative Performance (Boal, Skit, Movement, Sound); Artistic Performance (photo montage, video/audio recording, painting/sketching/other); Written paper, or other (must be approved by professor). See details in the assignment guide.
Length: Written paper is minimum 3 pages. Presentations are maximum 6 minutes.
Other: Each student must choose each of the above formats at least twice during the semester (other not included in this requirement).
3) Semester Project: Throughout the semester, each student will conduct original
research in the field on any topic related to intercultural communication. The outcome of this research will be
presented in two parts: 1) the student
will develop a presentation that successfully shows the findings of his or her
research. This presentation may be in
the form of a website, a documentary (video or audio), a portfolio of artistic
works (paintings, photographs, etc), or a written narrative account. 2) The student will submit a written report
that explains the presentation.
